Disney Plans Tron: Uprising Animated Series

By |2019-05-25T14:42:29-08:00November 6th, 2010|

Disney recently planned an animated Tron series that is scheduled for release in the summer of 2012. Having it actually happen though, of course hinges on the success of Tron: Legacy. It’s entitled Tron: Uprising.

The series takes place between the original Tron movie and Tron: Legacy. And the surprising part? The show has a strong cast in Elijah Wood, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mandy Moore, Lance Henricksen, Nate Corddry, and Reginald VelJohnson. Oh wait, the other huge surprise is Bruce Boxleitner reprising his role as Tron.

If that isn’t enough, behind the camera will be Charlie Bean (Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack) attached with Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz (Lost and Tron: Legacy). Joining them is co-producer of Tron: Legacy Justin Springer.

It’s a hell of a cast and crew. I’d normally not think much of a spin-off series for a film, but with this cast and crew the potential is massive. And let’s face it: Tron: Legacy will be a hit. There won’t be anything stopping Tron: Uprising.

News on Thundercats Remake

By |2019-05-25T14:42:30-08:00November 3rd, 2010|

The remake for the cartoon Thundercats has been moving forward. Producer Michael Jelenic shared news about wanting to take the old show’s story and simplifying it; the original series had a lot of loosely connected plots and characters. And Jelenic intends to bring things together more cohesively.

“I think when people see the final character designs, people will think it’s a different take, but it will feel very familiar to the old series. … The colors aren’t quite as bright as they were. It’s a little darker take, but you’ll recognize everybody.”

-Michael Jelenic

The people who did The Animatrix will be animating Thundercats. It’ll be intriguing to see how this pans out.

Oh yeah, and Lion-O still better say, “Thundercats, hoooooo!” What? I’m an 80s kid.

A New Battlestar Galactica Prequel

By |2019-05-25T14:42:31-08:00October 24th, 2010|

Battlestar Galactica spawned a critically acclaimed remake, and after its end, began a prequel entitled Caprica; which dealt with the events before the first Cylon war. Syfy recently green lit another prequel to Battlestar entitled Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. It’ll be set during the first Cylon war, following William Adama as a rookie Viper pilot.

“Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20’s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet… the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet.”

Many of my friends (by many, I mean all) know I’m a huge fan of Battlestar, but this latest installment has me pessimistic. I like the Adama character, but should he be the center of both Cylon wars? It seems far too contrived.

From a viewer standpoint, having William Adama as the main character in a prequel greatly lessens the show. There won’t be any sense of danger for him. We already know he’s safe; that he’ll make it to the Battlestar remake. So why bother watching?

I like the concept of a show based on the first Cylon war, but Syfy should have made the protagonist an unknown and build that person up. Not knowing the fate of the character would give it the same sense of danger that the Battlestar remake had. It’s what the prior viewers would want. Without it, it’s just a show running through the motions.

Nine Inch Nail’s Year Zero Moves Forward as HBO Miniseries

By |2019-05-25T14:42:32-08:00September 29th, 2010|

In 2007 Nine Inch Nails released a concept album entitled Year Zero. Coupled with it was an alternate reality game to further the concept that dealt with a fictional future where politics leaned heavily towards evil intentions and fanatics drowned out sanity.

Trent Reznor wrote the album during his frustrations with the Bush Administration, but put a spin on the music instead of writing a straightforward protest album. With a dash of science fiction in a form called, “The Presence”, Year Zero had an underlining horror element.

Now, why am I talking about it? Because Year Zero is finally moving forward to become a miniseries like Reznor has hoped for. Daniel Knauf of Carnivale is penning the pilot with BBC Worldwide Productions as the studio. It’s planned to be an HBO miniseries — which is smart, given the subject matter. There’s no word yet on a release date.

Sure, the inspiration for the concept is now dated, but the story was captivating. And there’s a lot that can be expounded on in a television format. It’s bound to be a very intriguing miniseries.

Voltron Making a Return

By |2019-05-25T14:42:33-08:00September 18th, 2010|

Screenwriters Thomas Donelly and Joshua Oppenheimer have been taking on film projects that would make geeks like me happy — they scribed the upcoming Conan movie and are currently penning the adaptation for Marvel’s Dr. Strange. Recently they have been hired by Atlas Entertainment to write the script for the big screen adaptation of Voltron.

A lot of us remember Voltron being a cartoon from the 80s about a group of five men who pilot five lion robots that combine to formĀ  Voltron. Together known as the Voltron Force, the group protected the planet Arus from King Zarkon and his ilk. Full of nostalgia yet?

Concept art for Voltron has recently been released. And it’s looking incredibly badass. Let’s hope they don’t film the action scenes like Transformers. Pull back the shot; let the audience see their massive scale.

It’s hard to be pessimistic about this project. It has potential. The kid in me is excited. We’ll see how it pans out for Atlas Entertainment.

The Dark Tower is Adapted by Universal

By |2019-05-25T14:42:34-08:00September 12th, 2010|

Stephen King’s fantasy series The Dark Tower has become Universal’s next franchise. It will be produced as both three films and a TV series. An interesting thing is that Ron Howard will be directing both the first movie and the first season of The Dark Tower. It will definitely keep the two coherent with each other, and that in itself is rather unique.

The Dark Tower is Stephen King’s series of books that can be described as a fantasy gunslinger. It also incorporates horror themes. Naturally. The plot revolves around Roland Deschain, the last survivor and gunslinger of Arthur Eld. Nations have been torn apart; some as far as merely vanishing. And time isn’t orderly. Roland searches for the Dark Tower, a building that’s only talked about; a building that is the nexus of universes.

The fact that the first movie and the first season of the TV series for The Dark Tower will have the same director is an exciting endeavor. Though, I’m curious if they’ll be using the same actors or not. Hopefully they do. And making it a series on HBO would be a good move.

Neil Gaiman’s Sandman Being Adapted

By |2019-05-25T14:42:34-08:00September 4th, 2010|

Neil Gaiman’s Sandman will be adapted into a TV series. Interestingly enough, the creator of Supernatural, Eric Kripke is rumored to be the showrunner. He’d actually be a perfect fit for the new series — his own show being a testament to that.

Sandman is a comic book written in 1989 about a character named Dream and his brothers and sisters — who are all essentially allegories. And the story deals with worlds-within-worlds.

The adaptation has a lot of potential, and it would be a smart move to put Eric Kripke at the helm.
