Robert Downey Jr. fulfilled his contractual obligation with Marvel Studios with Iron Man 3. Despite the success with playing Tony Stark, it was unclear if Downey would continue with the character that is essentially him; he expressed interest in moving on with other projects.
Luckily the man had a change of heart. He signed a new deal with Marvel for a two-picture deal. But no, it isn’t for two more Iron Man movies, but for The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3.
I can’t say I’m surprised — or disappointed that there isn’t an Iron Man movie in the near future. Tony Stark is an established character, and Marvel wants to continue expanding the shared movie universe. So it’s best to make room for newcomers entering the fray. But hey, there can’t be an Avengers film without Stark’s witty banter, much to the dismay of Captain America.
