Peter Jackson returned to The Lord of the Rings franchise to bring The Hobbit on the big screen. Unlike the previous movies that turned each book into a film adaptation, The Hobbit was split into three parts; the first being An Unexpected Journey, and the second that’s currently shooting, The Desolation of Smaug.
On top of the book being split into three movies, Jackson had a new character developed to introduce in The Desolation of Smaug. Evangeline Lilly of Lost joins as an elf named Tauriel, an archer and friend of Legolas and his family.
The Robin Hood-looking elf was created to have more women characters in an otherwise male-heavy cast. If I was a purist, I’d have an issue with a new character, but Jackson has done an excellent job with the franchise. It’s hard to worry.
The Hobbit returns to theaters in The Desolation of Smaug on December 13.
Oh yeah, the third movie is entitled The Hobbit: There and Back Again.
